Sindh Police takes Azam Swati into custody

KARACHI: Sindh Police has arrested PTI Senator Azam Swati in a case relating to making controversial statements against state institutions.

Sindh Police reached Quetta to arrest the senior politicians stating that 13 cases have been registered against Azam Swati in various police stations across the province. Swati was taken into custody and is expected to be brought to  the province on a special flight.

Two more cases have also surfaced against Azam Swati. An FIR registered on November 26 in Winder and Lasbela have been brought to light against the senior politician.

Azam Swati was not released despite being ordered by the Balochistan High Court and was kept in custody before being handed over Sindh Police to face the cases.

His lawyer said efforts are being made to submit protective bail so that the Sindh police does not arrest him. He said the Sindh government has given orders for arrest.

Earlier on Friday, the Balochistan High Court (BHC) ordered that all first information reports (FIR) registered against Azam Swati for his controversial tweets be quashed.

The orders were issued by the BHC on a petition filed by the senator’s son against the registration of multiple cases in Balochistan.

Five FIRs were registered in Balochistan against Azam Swati for his statements against senior military officers. The FIRs were registered against in Kuchlak, Hub, Zhob and other areas of the province.

Balochistan police arrested the PTI senator last week from Islamabad. He remained in custody after a local court in Quetta approved the law enforcement agency’s request for a physical remand.

Swaiti was already on judicial remand in Adiala Jail after being taken into custody for the second time in the case of a provocative tweet. He was shifted to Quetta after police receives a transit remand.

He approached the BHC which ordered that no more cases be registered against him. He had also suffered from poor health after being kept in custody in Kuchlak area of Balochistan. During the last hearing, the court had also sought a written report of the cases filed against Swati from the police chief.

After the order was passed, Swati’s lawyer Iqbal Shah said that the court has granted relief Swati. He said state lawyer was unable to prove the reason for registering cases against Azam Swati He added that the investigation officers had said that IG Balochistan was not aware of the cases.
