KARACHI: A contempt of court petition moved in Sindh High Court (SHC) by the Jamaat-e-Islami(JI) against postponement of second phase of local government elections in Karachi and Hyderabad.

Election Commission of Pakistan, Sindh Chief Minister, Provincial Minister Nasir Hussain and Sharjeel Inam Memon were made parties in the petition.

The petitioner has sought action against the Chief Minister of Sindh and others for writing a letter to postpone the elections.

The petition has been filed on behalf of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Munim Zafar and Saifuddin.

The petitioner said the term of local bodies has ended on 30 August 2020 and elections have to be held in 120 days as per law. However, Chief Minister of Sindh has withdrawn the delimitation of constituencies on January 12.

JI Lawyer submitted that Election Commission has rejected the Sindh government’s request to postpone the local government elections.

The petitioner said Sindh government has postponed the election due to the threat of ending the alliance with the Pakistan People’s Party by the MQM.
