ECP selected sworn enemy of PTI as Caretaker CM: Imran Khan

LAHORE: PTI Chairman Imran Khan lashed out at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the appointment of Syed Mohsin Naqvi as Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab.

In a series of tweets, the former prime minister said the PML-N has a history of selecting their own umpires but the ECP has selected a sworn enemy of the PTI as caretaker chief minister.

“PML-N has history of selecting their own umpires but it is incredible how ECP has selected a sworn enemy of PTI as Caretaker CM Punjab – a post meant for a non-partisan person,” he said.

He said Naqvi also made a voluntary return deal with National Accountability Bureau (NAB) which makes him ineligible to hold the post.

He said the Supreme Court of Pakistan in suo moto case no 17/2016 declared that incase of voluntary return, a person cannot hold any public office at the federal or provincial level in any state organization.

“ECP has helped reduce Pak to a Banana Republic making our democracy a joke,” he said, adding that he will be holding a presser tomorrow to expose this entire farce.

The PTI Parliamentary Committee rejected the nomination of Mohsin Naqvi as the Caretaker Chief minister of Punjab and decided to approach the courts.

A joint statement issued by Parliamentary Committee members – Mian Aslam Iqbal, Raja Basharat and Hashim Jawan Bakht – said Mohsin Naqvi is a unfit and inappropriate for the post of caretaker Chief Minister.

The statement said the election commission has laid the foundation of instability in the province. It added that Mohsin Naqvi’s role is controversial, completely devoid of competence and ability

The parliamentary committee members said they provided the details of Mohsin Naqvi’s capacity and character to the Election Commission.

They said Mohsin Naqvi’s appointment is a blow to the constitutional duty of conducting clean, transparent elections. They said the people of Punjab will not accept the highly controversial appointment.

They said that for conducting of free and transparent elections and effective transfer of power, a supervisory figure with the best reputation and ability is indispensable

The PTI parliamentary committee members announced to approach the Supreme Court and the people against the controversial decision.
