The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is likely to hold local government elections in Islamabad during this week, sources said.

They further said that the ECP had ordered officials concerned to supply polling items to the staff on emergency basis.

The elector watchdog also instructed Returning Officers (ROs) concerned to ensure the arrangements and supply of polling articles.

The sources said that the ECP would fix the polling date soon.

It is pertinent to mention here, on Dec 30 2022, the Islamabad High Court ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan to conduct local government elections in Islamabad on Saturday (Dec 31) as per schedule, asking the federal government to assist the ECP in ensuring holding the polls.

The court cancelled the December 19 notification of the interior ministry regarding the increase in the number of union councils, while the December 27 notification of the ECP regarding the postponement of the elections was nullified.

Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir gave a brief judgment on the petitions of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the Jamaat-e-Islami.

The court ordered that the LG elections be held on December 31. But the ECP could not hold elections in the capital despite the court’s order.

Meanwhile the PTI has filed a contempt of court petition against the ECP in the court.

Earlier, the ECP had submitted a written response to the court in which it was said that they were serious about fulfilling the constitutional responsibility of holding the LG elections. “We ordered timely LG elections, which was annulled by the high court.”

The electoral body had cancelled the December 31 schedule to hold the local government elections in the federal capital earlier this week, citing the change in the union councils of the capital territory.

However, the high court in its one-page short order, asked the federal government to ensure that “it assists the election commission in holding the local government polls”.

The ECP filed an intra-court appeal against the orders of the high court to hold local government polls in Islamabad today.

The PTI, taking to Twitter, claimed that voters are waiting outside the stations, but that the ECP staff is missing despite the court’s orders to hold elections.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan said that the ECP has “shown it is B team of imported government and its backers” by not implementing IHC’s orders.
