Islamabad police apprise LHC two cases registered against Fawad Chaudhry

• Petitioner urged LHC to grant protective bail to Chaudhry

LAHORE: The Islamabad police on Tuesday told the Lahore High Court (LHC) that two cases had been registered against former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry.

A report submitted by the DSP Legal Islamabad said that Aabpara police registered a FIR on Aug 22, 2022 on charges of obstructing public servants in discharge of functions and violation of Amplifier Act. In this case the former minister had not been arrested.

The second FIR was lodged by Kohsar police on Jan 25, 2023 on charges of extending threats to the chief election commissioner of Pakistan and his family members. Offence of sedition under section 124-A PPC was also included in the case.

Punjab police also submitted a report saying three cases had been registered against the PTI leader at police stations of Mangla Cantt, Jhelum, New Airport, Attock and Madina Town of Faisalabad during the last year.

However, it said, two of the cases had been cancelled while the former minister had been declared innocent in the third FIR of Attock district.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) also told the LHC that it did not require Mr Chaudhry in any case.

The reports were filed in a petition filed by Nabeel Shahzad, a cousin of Chaudhry, seeking a direction to the FIA and the police to furnish details of cases registered against Chaudhry.

The petitioner also urged the LHC to grant protective bail to Chaudhry so that he could have a fair opportunity to appear before the courts of relevant jurisdiction to prove his innocence.

Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh adjourned the hearing till next week.

The judge also overruled a registrar office’s objection on another petition seeking contempt proceedings against the police chiefs of Punjab and Islamabad for not producing Fawad Chaudhry before the court despite repeated directions.

The office objected that the petitioner did not furnish the copies of the court’s order allegedly violated.

Advocate Azhar Siddique, the counsel for the petitioner, told the judge that all the orders of the court had been annexed to the petition.

After overruling the objection, Justice Sheikh directed the office to fix the petition for hearing.

Petitioner Nabeel Shahzad pleaded that a single judge of the LHC on Jan 25 ordered the police to produce the PTI leader when the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) ‘abducted’ him in a political case.

The petitioner said the inspectors general of police of both Islamabad and Punjab deliberately defied the court’s repeated directions and took Chaudhry to federal capital from Lahore despite producing him before the court.

He pleaded that both police chiefs committed contempt by not producing the PTI leader before the court.
