KARACHI: After boycotting the second phase of the Local Government (LG) elections, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) said the polls have no moral standing and do not represent the people.

Addressing a press conference alongside party leaders, MQM Convener Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui rejected the local bodies polls being held in Karachi and Hyderabad, saying they have no constitutional status and the winners are not the representatives of the people.

Khalid Maqbool expressed outrage over federal and provincial governments and said the MQM was stepping back from facilitating others to forming governments.

He categorically rejected the second phase of municipal voting and said that the citizens of Karachi and Hyderabad have foiled the conspiracy to snatch the polls from them. He added that the low turnout of voters has raised a huge question mark over the polls.

“I want to ask whether the Local Government being formed is the representative of the people,” he said, adding whether next mayor will be able to resolve the problems.

He said citizens stayed back from the polls which shows the MQM popularity as the people foiled a bid to snatch the elections and their cities.

He questioned whether the elected representatives truly represent Karachi and Hyderabad with such a low turnout of voters, saying they support their political maturity and pro-democratic approach.

He said the MQM will demonstrate that it is not reliant on being a part of the Parliament. He said the people support the party unconditionally and will stand by it.

He reminded that his political party did not participate in the 1993 elections and people supported the decision and the voter turnout was low.

He lashed out at the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) for failing to serve the people of Karachi despite getting a chance after MQM didn’t not participate in the 2002 municipal elections.

He said the people of Karachi, Hyderabad and urban areas of Sindh that their real representatives are still present. “No one will accept these elections. They have no moral standing,” he exclaimed.

He said that MQM is not seeking any political benefit from boycotting the LG polls. He claimed that they will serve Karachi without being a part of parliament.  He added that MQM has completely rejected the LG elections nor will citizens accept the results.
