LAHORE: Punjab Assembly session on Wednesday has been adjourned without seeking the vote of confidence by Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

A lengthy session of the Punjab Assembly continued in the week hours of Thursday after the previous session was adjourned as the date changed.

Deputy Speaker Wasiq Qayyum summoned a new session at 12:05 AM on Thursday, January 12, 2023, with a new agenda to seek a vote of confidence.

PA Speaker Sibtain Khan chaired the new session of the provincial assembly. Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat and Information Minister Mian Aslam Iqbal tabled the motion regarding the vote of confidence.

A ruckus erupted in the assembly as the opposition attempted to delay the voting. They threw chairs and raised slogans to disrupt proceedings, while government lawmakers raised slogans in favour of PTI chairman Imran Khan.

The opposition eventually boycotted the session and left the hall after which the voting began. Federal Interior Minister Rana Sanauallah and PML-N leader Atta Tarar also left the building.

PTI and PML-Q had a lengthy joint parliamentary meeting to discuss the political situation. The ruling coalition is confident that it has the required number of 187 lawmakers for the vote of confidence.

PTI leader Mian Mahmood-ur-Rehman has claimed the party has the required numbers. A large number of PTI and PML-Q MPAs are present in the Punjab Assembly Hall. Bells were rungs into assembly’s hall to invite the lawmakers into the main hall after which the doors were closed.

In a surprise move, the ruling coalition said Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi will receive the vote of confidence from the provincial assembly. Soon after, Pervaiz Elahi reached the provincial assembly and met the lawmakers. He also chaired a joint parliamentary session of the PTI and PML-Q MPAs.

The Punjab Assembly’s session was resumed after interval of over two hours under the chair of PA Speaker Sibtain Khan. The ruling coalition decided to show its strength and seek the vote of confidence.

During the session, the opposition lawmakers pointed out the quorum was incomplete and gathered before the speaker’s dias. However, the speaker said that the quorum is complete and the treasury lawmakers are in majority.

The speaker offered the opposition MPAs to recount the number of lawmakers present in the assembly hall. Later, the opposition requested the speaker to adjourn the session which he refused.

Earlier, PTI Vice President Fawad Chaudhry that PTI and its allies completed the number of 187 lawmakers in the Punjab Assembly. He said the voting process will be complete so that they move ahead with dissolving the assembly and onwards towards general elections.
