Army divers end rescue operation at Tanda Dam, 52 bodies found

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Army and civil authorities have completed the relief and rescue operation at Tanda Dam in district Kohat of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In an update, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the operation to find the missing bodies has been completed after a boat carrying students and teachers capsized in the lake.

The operation was launched on the orders of the army chief to help the civil authorities in the tragic incident. Pakistan Army SSG and Engineering Corps troops recovered the body of the last missing student.

The military’s press wing said the operation continued for 48 hours till the time army divers found the last missing body. All deceased 52 drowned students and staff has been found, it added.

The army diving teams of SSG army engineers and Rescue 1122 also rescued 5 students alive from Tanda Dam.

It must be mentioned that dozens of seminary students drowned in the Tanda Dam due to a boat capsize on Sunday.

According to Kohat District Police, the children were riding on the boat during a field trip when it overturned in the middle of the lake apparently due to overloading.

Police said the children, aged between 5 and 15 years, did not have any safety gadgets or lifesaving jackets on the boat.

Rescue 1122 teams, police, civil administration and Pakistan Army divers reached the spot soon after the incident and fished out the bodies.

Police lodged a first information report against high officials of the Irrigation Department, including its Chief Engineer, XEN, SDO and sub-engineer, and the boat owner.
