ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry was released from Adiala Jail on Wednesday after being granted bail.
A large number of party workers and leaders were gathered outside the jail to welcome him. They showered rose petals and chanted slogans as Fawad walked out of jail.
A district and sessions court granted bail to Fawad Chaudhry in a sedition case filed against him by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for allegedly making threatening statements.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Faizan Haider Gillani granted bail to former information minister in a case registered against him for ‘threatening’ members of ECP.
The court approved Chaudhry’s bail petition on the condition that he would not repeat any such words against a constitutional institution.
During today’s hearing, Fawad’s lawyer Babar Awan asked the court to approve the bail of his client. He said such charges should be levelled against someone for speaking two words.
The court asked the lawyer what did Fawad mean when he threatened the family members of the ECP officials. The judge reminded Awan that PTI Chairman Imran Khan had also spoken in a similar tone about his colleague Additional Sessions Judge Zeba Chaudhry.
The prosecutor opposed Fawad’s bail and said that the election commission’s officials were targeted. He argued that Fawad’s statements incited people and police has documented evidence against him
ECP lawyer Saad Hassan said that the PTI leader’s photogrammetric and voice match tests were done while he was in custody. The judge questioned for the need for the tests when Fawad has accepted the statements.
The election commission’s lawyer added that further investigation can be conducted at any point in the case going forward.
The judge added that Fawad should not have issued such remarks. The judge granted bail to the PTI leader against surety bonds worth Rs20,000.
Islamabad police arrested former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry from his residence for ‘threatening’ Election Commission of Pakistan members a week ago.
A case against Chaudhary was registered at the Kohsar police station in Islamabad on the complaint of Secretary of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Omer Hamid Khan.
Later, District and Sessions court in Islamabad rejected the police’s plea to extend PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry’s custody and sent him to jail on judicial remand.
Judicial Magistrate Waqas Ahmad Raja heard the case and issued a detailed five-page verdict. The investigating officer sought to extend the physical remand of the former minister by four days.
