PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Haji Ghulam Ali has invited officials from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to finalize a date for the general elections in the province.

The governor wrote a letter to the ECP and invited the officials to his office on March 7 (Tuesday) or March 8 (Wednesday) at 11 AM. He said the orders of the Supreme Court will be strictly implemented.

The letter was written in response to a letter sent by the election commission for the announcement of the election date in view of the apex court’s verdict.

The Supreme Court, in a 3-2 verdict, ruled that elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab should be held within 90 days.

The verdict said the Governor KP should announce the election date as he signed the summary for the dissolution of the assembly. Regarding Punjab, the court said the governor was not bound as he had not signed the summary.

Earlier KP Governor Haji Ghulam Ali said he had received a letter sent by the ECP but has not opened it. The governor said he will definitely give a date for the provincial assembly’s polls.

The governor said that he always respected the courts, but the letter had been sent to his principal secretary. He said the orders of the Supreme Court would be followed.

“We will definitely announce a date for the elections as we have always respected courts and will do so in the future as well,” he said.

The governor has also expressed his disapproval to the president’s announcement of holding polls in Punjab on April 30.

He said that he was hoping for a unanimous date for the elections in both the provinces – Punjab and KP.

He said it would have been better if the president and the chief election commissioner decided on the matter after thorough consultations.

The governor also highlighted that there was a stark difference in the situation between both provinces.

The election commission had requested a date from the governor for provincial elections as per the orders of the Supreme Court (SC).

The electoral agency sent letters to Governor Ali for the KP Assembly elections in the light of the apex court’s orders.

The letters said an early date should be suggested for the provincial assembly elections so that other arrangements could be made.

However, the letter sent by the election commission was not in the governor’s name but in the name of his principal secretary.
