LAHORE: Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has asked all the concerned departments to remain alert as heavy rains continue in different cities of Punjab, Bol News reported.

The PDMA said the rain continued across Punjab and in several cities it rained cats and dogs. Heavy rainfall could submerge low-lying areas in Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi. The PDMA said strong winds and hails could damage weak infrastructure and standing crops.

The management authority expressed fear that there was also a risk of land sliding in Murree. The authority’s spokesperson said PDMA has directed all the relevant authorities to stay alert. “All the DCs should keep machinery and staff on alert to cope with any emergency situation. District Emergency Operations Centres staff should also be prepared to assist the citzens.

PDMA Director General Imran Qureshi said situation of all the districts was being monitored through PDMA provincial control room.

“The PDMA is in contact with all the divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners,” he said.

The disaster management authority’s spokesperson asked travelers to avoid unnecessary travel during rainfall. Citizens should call PDMA helpline 1129 for assistance in case of an emergency.

With the outset of Ramadan in Pakistan, most of the cities including Karachi have been experiencing rain and thunderstorms turning the weather pleasant for the citizens.

Widespread falls with strong winds have hit parts of Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and KP under the influence of a westerly wave that entered the country on March 22.

Meanwhile, the metropolitan city is expected to witness falls today as well westerly winds would continue to prevail in the region.

The meteorological department has said that there have been chances of drizzle and light rain in the city today that will stay till night.
