KARACHI: Police have started an investigation after a high-rise building located on Main Shahrah-e-Faisal Road caught fire on Sunday, BOL News reported.

Police visited the 16-storey building for inspection and recorded statements from eyewitnesses. A witness, Alamzeb, told police that the fire erupted on the mezzanine floor of the building.

Initial investigation revealed that smoke and then flames emerged from the mezzanine floor. Police said there is a tarpaulin sheet perched on the front of the building where advertising banners are placed.

Police investigation revealed that the fire spread rapidly due to advertising banners. It said the interior of the building was not much affected.

Earlier on Sunday, the fire that engulfed the high-rise building was brought control after hectic efforts for several hours. More than 12 fire tenders, two snorkels, two water bowsers and several tankers were used to douse the fire.

Law enforcement personnel, including the police and Rangers, were present to maintain order, while a petrol pump adjacent to the building was also closed.

Chief Fire Officer Ishtiaq Ahmed said there are several offices located in the commercial building. He said that the panaflex on the front of the building caught fire due to a short circuit and engulfed the building.

Assistant Commissioner Ferozabad Umamah Solangi said that no loss of life was reported as the building was empty, adding that action will be taken against the illegal sign boards.
