ISLAMABAD: The additional inspector general of police and Ministry of Interior on Tuesday demanded from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold trial of the contempt case against the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) chairman at the Adiala Jail, Bol News reported.

A four-member commission headed by Nisar Durrani were hearing the contempt of ECP case against the PTI chief, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry.

The ECP member said they had been summoning the PTI chief but he did not show up. ECP member Nisar Durrani inquired why he did not come.

The additional IG operations said the PTI chairman had life threats. It was a statement of the PTI chief that he had life threats, hence, his trial should be held in jail, he said.

The election commission member wondered that the police could not provide security to one person and after two days elections would be held across the country. “How would you ensure security in the country during election,” he questioned.

The ECP secretary apprised that as per the police and interior ministry threats were received. The ministry said they could not bring him for fear of his security, he said adding that the ministry wanted conduct of the trial at Adiala Jail.

The commission summoned the interior ministry secretary on the next hearing and adjourned the hearing till November 13.
