RAWALPINDI: The son of former Prime Minister and senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, has decided to run in the upcoming general elections, sources said.

Nadir Khaqan Abbasi is set to contest the general elections as an independent candidate for the National Assembly (NA) seat in Murree, the family’s ancestral constituency. This decision comes after an earlier announcement by Abbasi that he would not participate in the elections.

In a media interaction in Islamabad, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, a prominent figure in the PML-N, avoided questions about the possibility of forming a new political party or leaving the PML-N.

Responding to inquiries about his communication with Nawaz Sharif, Abbasi stated that neither had Nawaz Sharif contacted him, nor did he feel the need for such contact.

He confirmed that the general elections are scheduled for February 8 and asserted that the conditions for a level playing field are similar to those in the past when the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) came to power.

Regarding the “malicious intent” in cases such as Toshakhana and Al-Qadir, Abbasi expressed confidence in the judicial system, stating that justice would be served, even if not immediately, perhaps after five to six years.

He highlighted that he has been facing cases in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) courts for four years over attending a meeting and criticized the NAB chairman for being unaware of the impact on people’s lives.

Earlier reports suggested that Shahid Khaqan Abbasi would formally announce his departure from the PML-N in the coming days.

Sources indicated that the decision to leave the party was made after consulting with his constituents. Despite terming the upcoming polls as ‘pointless,’ Abbasi mentioned the possibility of joining a new party after the general elections.
