The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi has rejected the physical remand request of former interior minister and Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Shaikh Rashid.

The AML chief was arrested on Tuesday by the police for being released on bail in the May 9 incidents and was produced in ATC this morning.

During the hearing, Newtown Police requested Sheikh Rasheed’s physical remand. Meanwhile, the former minister’s lawyer opposed the physical remand of Sheikh Rashid.

The defending lawyer argued that the police played the statements of Sheikh Rashid’s various meetings; the statements played by the police were of the sit-ins and the Gujranwala rally; no statement of Sheikh Rashid played by the police was of May 9.

Later, the court rejected the request of the police for physical remand after the arguments of the sheikh’s lawyer and the statement of the investigating officer and sent him to Adiala jail on judicial remand. The police also handed over Sheikh Rashid’s bed, cigar, clothes, and other belongings.

A three-member bench of the Lahore High Court heard the petition filed against Sheikh Rashid’s decision to approve nomination papers.
