KARACHI: Senior Deputy Convener of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Mustafa Kamal acknowledged that the circulating audio leak on social media indeed featured his voice, but he emphasized that there was nothing novel about their party’s rivals alleging the authenticity of their mandate.

In a brief video statement, Kamal, a former mayor of Karachi and an elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA), affirmed his endorsement of the leaked audio clip.

He began by recounting a situation during which an MQM-P delegation met with leaders from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The MQM-P and PML-N are currently engaged in negotiations regarding government formation at the federal level, with several rounds of discussions already held prior to the National Assembly session.

Kamal narrated that during the meeting with the PML-N representatives, it seemed they were reluctant to engage with the MQM-P delegation. The PML-N delegates mentioned that following the meeting, they had scheduled discussions with the leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). When MQM-P leaders inquired about the progress of the discussions, they were informed that the details were confidential.

However, two points were disclosed to them: firstly, the PPP purportedly claimed that MQM-P’s mandate was entirely fabricated, and secondly, the PPP asserted that both the PML-N and PPP possessed adequate numbers for government formation, thereby suggesting sidelining MQM-P.

In a subsequent clarification video, Kamal reaffirmed the authenticity of the audio and explained that he was informing his party members about the discussions held with the PML-N.

He pointed out that both MQM-P and PPP have publicly accused each other of having fake mandates, hence, there was nothing surprising in the revelation.

Moreover, Kamal highlighted the significance of the audio leak occurring during a meeting of the Rabita Committee, expressing suspicions about the presence of individuals affiliated with MQM-London within their ranks.

Following a thorough forensic examination of the audio, Kamal claimed they identified the source of the leak as a member of MQM-London, suggesting that they released it believing they had obtained substantial information.
