ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have reached a consensus for forming the federal government. As per their agreement, Shahbaz Sharif will be the prime minister and Asif Ali Zardari will be President of Pakistan.

The announcement was made during a joint press conference addressed by Shahbaz Sharif, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Asif Ali Zardari and central leadership of the both parties at Zardari House, here on late Tuesday night.

Shahbaz said that both the parties have agreed on a ‘power-sharing formula, adding that they have required number of seats in the National Assembly to form the government.

He asserted that they had invited the PTI-back independent candidates to form the government if they could have done, adding that they would heartedly accept the PTI government if they do so.

Shehbaz affirmed that his party, in conjunction with the PPP, now possesses the necessary parliamentary support to potentially form the upcoming government. He expressed appreciation for the efforts of the dialogue committees in bringing the talks to a positive conclusion.

In response to a query, Shehbaz Sharif clarified that the PPP had not initially requested any ministries.

“Negotiations occur between two parties, and matters are resolved through mutual discussions. This doesn’t imply that we endorse their demands or vice versa; both parties present their perspectives, but finding a middle ground constitutes true political success,” he elaborated.

According to sources, the PPP will not be represented in the federal cabinet, with the Senate Chairman and the Governors of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) coming from the Bilawal-led party.

Additionally, the sources asserted that the PML-N would secure positions such as the National Assembly (NA) speaker and the Governors of Sindh and Balochistan.

Shehbaz acknowledged that the road ahead for the coalition government will be challenging, but stressed that the coalition alliance is prepared to confront and overcome the obstacles together.

Despite extending invitations to independent candidates who secured significant victories, Shehbaz noted their failure to garner sufficient numbers, despite forming alliances with parties like MWM and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC). He expressed gratitude to allied parties such as MQM-P, PML-Q, and IPP for their support in this endeavor.
