ISLAMABAD: Members of the Upper House of Parliament called on Tuesday for the Senate to conduct an investigation into alleged electoral irregularities during the general elections held on February 8. Their aim is to “ensure free and fair polls and uphold the respect for the public mandate.”

During the session, an adjournment motion was presented by Senators Muhammad Tahir Bizinjo, Sardar Muhammad Shafiq Tareen, Mushtaq Ahmed, Syed Ali Zafar, and others, addressing the aftermath of the 2024 general elections, which they deemed a matter of national importance.

Numerous senators expressed apprehensions regarding accusations of election manipulation, particularly referencing a recent press conference by former Rawalpindi commissioner Liaqat Ali Chattha. Chattha had implicated the Election Commission of Pakistan and Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa in the purported “rigging.”

Jamat-e-Islami (JI) Senator Mushtaq Ahmed urged the initiation of treason and breach of constitution proceedings against the chief election commissioner, insisting on his resignation. He emphasized that those involved in electoral malpractice betray the nation and demanded accountability under Article 6 of the constitution.

Senator Mushtaq advocated for the establishment of an empowered judicial commission to investigate the elections thoroughly, proposing a nationwide inquiry based on Form 45. He also called for the cessation of funds allocated for election expenses, condemning those involved in rigging for jeopardizing national security and unity.

PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for its perceived double standards in reaching out to other parties regarding election irregularities, contrasting it with its stance toward JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman. Siddiqui highlighted the need for the PTI to address allegations of injustices faced by other parties in past elections and urged an end to confrontational politics.

PTI Senator Saif Ullah Abro demanded the verification of Form-45 for the 858 total seats of national and provincial assemblies to ascertain the credibility of the 2024 General Elections. He pledged his party’s acceptance of the election outcome determined through an audit process.

Meanwhile, PTI Senator Barrister Ali Zafar asserted that despite instances of electoral misconduct, the people of Pakistan had decisively supported the PTI on February 8. He condemned attempts to deter PTI supporters from voting and accused opponents of attempting to undermine the party’s mandate through both pre- and post-election irregularities.
