ISLAMABAD: The Grand Opposition Alliance, formed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and other major opposition parties, has announced an anti-government movement after Eid-ul-Fitr.

As per sources, this newly established opposition alliance, including the Sunni Ittehad Council, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), Majlis-e-Wadhat-e-Muslimeen (MWM), and Balochistan National Party (BNP), plans to hold its inaugural joint public gathering in Quetta on April 14.

Additionally, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has hinted at joining the opposition alliance, with its representative Liaquat Baloch stating that the party will make a final decision after the approval of the Majlis Shura. The Grand Opposition Alliance intends to organize public gatherings in various parts of the country to protest against what they deem as ‘massive’ electoral rigging.

The schedule for these gatherings in other cities will be announced later after consultations with all parties.

Insiders familiar with the matter revealed that efforts will be made to include the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), led by Moulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, in the opposition movement against the government.

BNP Chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal has been assigned the responsibility to contact Moulana Fazal-ur-Rehman and the Jiye Sindh Party.

The Grand Opposition Alliance is set to carry out this movement under the slogan of ‘non-interference in politics, an independent judiciary, rule of law, and supremacy of the people’.

Earlier in the day, a meeting was held among six major opposition parties, including PTI, to discuss the formation of the ‘grand opposition alliance’ to challenge the government.

The meeting was attended by Chairman PTI Gohar Ali Khan, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Liaquat Baloch, PkMAP chief Mehmood Achackzai, MWM head Allama Nasir Abbas, BNP Chairman Sardar Akhtar Mengal, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub, and Asad Qaiser.

Following the meeting, a press statement was issued, in which all participating parties denounced the alleged manipulation in the results of the 2024 general elections. The statement criticized the strengthening of the ‘fake government’ and imposition of a ‘fake mandate’ on unelected individuals. It called for an immediate halt to all forms of political interference and urged institutions to operate within the bounds of the constitution.
