Enthusiastic residents of Mian Channu warmly greet Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem

LAHORE: Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem reached his hometown, Mian Channu, on Sunday after his historic victory at the Paris Olympics 2024. His arrival was met with a massive celebration, as streets were packed with enthusiastic residents eager to catch a glimpse of their hero.

Arshad Nadeem’s flight landed at Lahore Airport at 12:45 AM, where he was warmly greeted by a crowd that included family members, federal ministers, and other dignitaries. Additionally, many of his fellow townspeople from Mian Channu had traveled to Lahore to join in the festivities.

The security at Allama Iqbal Airport was heightened, with a heavy presence of police and ASF personnel ensuring safety. As his flight entered Pakistani airspace, the air traffic controller offered a special welcome, commending him for his achievements.

On his way to Mian Channu, Nadeem and his convoy made a stop at Raiwind Tableeghi Markaz for Fajr prayers and later paused for breakfast at a restaurant on Multan Road in Phool Nagar. Locals gathered at the hotel in Phool Nagar, giving him a warm reception with traditional drum beats and taking photos with the celebrated athlete.

Nadeem, who made history by setting a new Olympic record in javelin throw at 92.97 meters, is Pakistan’s first-ever individual Olympic gold medalist. His performance surpassed the previous record of 90.57 meters set by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In recognition of his achievement, the Punjab government has announced a reward of Rs100 million, while the Sindh government has offered Rs50 million.

On Pakistan’s 77th Independence Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the issuance of a special postage stamp titled “Azam-e-Istehkam” in honor of Nadeem, symbolizing both his athletic prowess and the nation’s enduring spirit.

Furthermore, President Asif Ali Zardari has ordered the conferment of the Hilal-e-Imtiaz award on Nadeem for his exceptional performance. A special ceremony will be held to present this prestigious award, as outlined in Article 259 (2) of the Constitution.
