Karachi has been experiencing intermittent rain since Sunday, bringing both pleasant weather and several challenges for residents. The Met department predicts more rain today, with showers likely continuing until tomorrow.
Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz reported that Nazimabad recorded the highest rainfall so far, at 76mm. He also indicated that the fifth spell of the monsoon is expected to start on August 13.
The rain has caused significant road damage and water accumulation in various parts of Karachi. Major roads in Malir Kala Board, Liaquatabad, the Airport, Model Colony, Stadium Road, and Nazimabad are waterlogged, leading to traffic disruptions.
A particularly large pothole has appeared near Esa Nagri, prompting police to close the road to prevent accidents.
The worsening road conditions are causing inconvenience to commuters. Authorities urge residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in affected areas.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a warning on Sunday about the risk of urban flooding in Karachi due to expected heavy rains in the next two days. The advisory emphasized the potential for significant rainfall in the Karachi division until August 6.
The NDMA highlighted that heavy rains could lead to urban flooding in various parts of the city, urging all relevant institutions to take necessary precautions and action.
The authority has issued instructions to municipal authorities, emergency services, and other concerned organizations to remain vigilant and prepared for potential flooding incidents.
As the city navigates these challenges, residents are advised to stay informed and follow the updates from the Met department and local authorities. The situation is expected to become clearer as the weather system approaches.
