PM inaugurates renovated Gaddafi Stadium, lauds PCB
LAHORE: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Friday commended the national cricket team, calling them the country’s heroes and expressing confidence in their ability to win the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the newly renovated Gaddafi Stadium, the premier expressed his delight over the stadium’s state-of-the-art refurbishment, completed in a record 117 days. He extended his appreciation to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman and Federal Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi for overseeing the project and congratulated all PCB members involved. The Prime Minister also instructed the chairman to recognize and reward the efforts of all those who contributed to this major accomplishment.
Highlighting the efficiency of the project, PM Shehbaz remarked that after “Shehbaz Speed,” it was now time for “Mohsin Speed.” He also acknowledged the role of the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) in upgrading the stadium.
Shehbaz Sharif praised the national cricket team’s recent performances, expressing optimism that they would clinch the Champions Trophy. He further voiced his confidence in Pakistan’s victory over India, stating that such a win would bring immense joy to 240 million Pakistanis.
Drawing a parallel between governance and sports, he emphasized that teamwork was key to both. He credited his cabinet’s collective efforts for stabilizing the economy, likening the financial crisis of the past eight months to the fast deliveries of legendary Australian bowler Dennis Lillee. However, he asserted that his team remained resilient, helping Pakistan overcome economic challenges.
The Prime Minister congratulated the nation on hosting a major international sporting event after nearly three decades. He also extended his gratitude to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for ensuring necessary facilities for the construction team through the Punjab government.
Assuring comprehensive security arrangements for the matches, he promised cricket fans a safe and enjoyable experience. Welcoming US Consul General Kristin Hawkins at the event, PM Shehbaz expressed hope that the US cricket team would soon visit Pakistan for international fixtures.
Earlier, the Prime Minister formally inaugurated the upgraded stadium. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also addressed the gathering.
The event was attended by Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Federal Ministers Attaullah Tarar, Ahsan Iqbal, Azam Nazir Tarar, Rana Tanveer, and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, along with Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad, provincial ministers, senior journalists, and other distinguished guests.
