Measles cases surge in Karachi and Sindh
The number of measles cases is rising in Karachi, with over 2,000 cases reported across Sindh this year, sources reveal.
According to the Sindh Health Department, 900 cases have been recorded in Karachi hospitals alone. Hospital officials report that government hospitals receive four to six measles patients daily.
Children under five are the most affected, with some hospitalized due to pneumonia caused by the disease.
A measles outbreak in Khairpur district has led to the deaths of seven children in just two days—five in Sagyoon and two in Pir Jo Goth.
Measles is a highly contagious but vaccine-preventable viral disease. Symptoms typically appear 10–12 days after exposure and last about a week, including fever, cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes, and white spots in the mouth. A red rash begins on the face before spreading to the body.
Complications can include diarrhea, middle ear infections, and pneumonia.
