Gilgit-Baltistan Elections 2020: Administration declares holiday from Nov 14-16

The administration of Gilgit Baltistan has declared a public holiday from November 14 to 16 due to the legislative assembly elections.

Gilgit-Baltistan elections for the legislative assembly are all set to take place on November 15, and electioneering in the region is in full swing by all political parties.

This will be the third election since GB was given the power to rule itself in 2009 through its assembly. However, let’s take a look at a history of contested polls in GB.

In connection with the elections, there will be a public holiday in Gilgit-Baltistan from November 14 to 16, a notification has been issued by the Election Commission Secretariat.

At least 330 candidates will contest this ballot exercise for the 33-member GB Assembly. GB has 24 constituencies and its assembly has 33 seats. More than 700,000 voters will exercise their right of franchise elect 24 candidates in Gilgit-Baltistan elections 2020.

The Legislative Assembly of GB is an elected body that has the power to legislate on 61 subjects, including land revenue, and administrative courts.

The Assembly also votes on the annual budget of the GB Consolidated Fund. The tenure of the GB Legislative Assembly is five years, however, it may be dissolved earlier by the Governor on the advice of the Chief Minister.
