Alan Cumming, a Scottish actor, announced on Friday that he was returning his Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) medal after having his eyes “opened” to “the toxicity of empire.”

The actor’s statement comes while the royal family is already experiencing great joy in the wake of Prince Harry’s severe accusations against members of his own family.

Harry’s criticism has received no retort from family members.

The actor from “Instinct” and “The Good Wife,” who is also a citizen of the United States, wrote on his Instagram page that although he had been “very thrilled” to receive the accolade in the 2009 Queen’s birthday honours list, he had subsequently come to a different conclusion.

According to Cumming, he received the OBE “for activism for equal rights for the gay and lesbian community” in addition to his work as an actor.

“The Queen’s death and the ensuing conversations about the role of monarchy and especially the way the British Empire profited at the expense (and death) of indigenous peoples across the world really opened my eyes,” Cumming said.

“Also, thankfully, times and laws in the US have changed, and the great good the award brought to the LGBTQ+ cause back in 2009 is now less potent than the misgivings I have being associated with the toxicity of empire.”

An inquiry for comment was not immediately answered by Buckingham Palace.

Cumming obtained U.S. citizenship in 2008. He is a theatre artist who has won two Tony Awards and a Laurence Olivier Award.

On Friday, Cumming turned 58 years old. He announced to his followers that he had returned the OBE.

“I… explained my reasons and reiterated my great gratitude for being given it in the first place. I’m now back to being plain old Alan Cumming again,” he said.

Following research of the “tortured history” between his native Wales and the English and British states, fellow actor Michael Sheen stated in 2020 that he had resigned from his OBE. Reuters/Web Desk
