King Charles to use same oil on coronation as Queen Elizabeth
According to a new report, Britain’s new King Charles III may meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as the UK and EU near an agreement on the Northern Ireland protocol.
The meeting, which Tory Brexiters fear will drag the 74-year-old King into politics, could happen during Leyen’s visit to the UK.
Buckingham Palace said: “The King is pleased to meet any world leader if they are visiting Britain and it is the government’s advice that he should do so.”
Downing Street may try to head off growing controversy over the King’s participation in events marking agreement on a revised version of the Northern Ireland protocol.
According to the Financial Times, the King will meet Ursula, who is in Windsor with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to finalise changes to the deal. The royal family of the United Kingdom usually stays out of day-to-day political dealings.
Lady Arlene Foster, a former Northern Ireland first minister and key figure in the Democratic Unionist party, tweeted that she couldn’t “quite believe” Downing Street had asked King Charles to become involved in such a contentious deal.
