The Princess of Wales ignored a wolf whistle while touring a market to promote the launch of her new campaign focusing on children’s early years.

Kate, dressed in a bottle green coat, went to Kirkgate Market in Leeds’ northern city to meet members of the public and stall holders to mark the launch of her “life’s work” – the Shaping Us project, which aims to highlight the importance of a child’s formative years.

She asked them about their early childhood memories, toured some of the market stalls, and even posed for selfies with surprised shoppers.

One person in the crowd could be heard wolf whistling in Kate’s direction as she walked through the market, but she ignored it and continued on her tour.

Canvassing parents out shopping she said “they feel this is an issue for them” and praised Leeds for its “impressive” initiative having children and young people at the “heart of the city”.

She was surrounded by shoppers who had no idea the Victorian market would be hosting a royal visit, and one pensioner addressed the future Queen as “love” when they spoke.

Shirley Wainwright, 75, from Harrogate said she made Kate laugh when she told her: “I didn’t know love you were coming, it was a complete surprise.

She then went to the University of Leeds, where she gave a lecture and led a discussion about her Shaping Up campaign to students on the childhood studies degree program.

“I really want to come and study again,” she told the students.

“It makes me want to go back to university,” he admitted to another group. “They say it’s never too late.”

Ahead of the visit to Leeds today, she also released a video message about her Shaping Us project, where she said: “Our early childhood, the time from pregnancy to the age of five, fundamentally shapes the rest of our lives.
