Several letters were written by Princess Diana that show how difficult her “desperate and ugly” divorce from Prince Charles was have been revealed.

During her public and acrimonious divorce from the now-king, she wrote 32 “emotionally raw” letters and message cards to her friends Susie and Tarek Kassem.

She describes being “on my knees” over the divorce settlement in them.

She also writes about her fears that her phone was being bugged – a plot line that appeared in the most recent series of The Crown – and thanks the Kassems for inviting her to spend an otherwise lonely Christmas and Easter with them.

The Kassems claim that owning the poignant documents is a burden they do not want to pass on to their children or grandchildren, and they are auctioning them off for an estimated £90,000.

The proceeds will go to charities that Diana supported.

On April 28, 1996, Diana wrote one of the most telling letters revealing how depressed she was as a result of the divorce.

She wrote to apologize for having to cancel a trip to see Tosca with them due to the strain it was putting on her.

She stated: “I am having a very difficult time and pressure is serious and coming from all sides. It’s too difficult sometimes to keep one’s head up and today I am on my knees and just longing for this divorce to go through as the possible cost is tremendous.”

Her handwriting, which is normally open and flowing, deteriorates near the end of the letter, presumably from where she was struggling while writing.

She also revealed that she was concerned that her phone at Kensington Palace was ‘constantly’ bugged and that recordings of her private conversations were being passed on to the Royal family.

“As I don’t have a mobile it is difficult to discuss personal issues as my lines here are constantly recorded and passed on. she wrote to Mrs Kassem on May 20, 1996.

“If I’d known a year ago what I’d experience going through this divorce I never would have consented. It’s desperate and ugly.”

She thanked the Kassems in one remarkable letter for allowing her to spend Christmas 1995 with them while William and Harry were with their father at Sandringham.

After Buckingham Palace announced Diana would not be attending the festivities, it was widely assumed she would spend it alone at Kensington Palace.
