PEMRA issues show cause notice to Samaa for casting aspersions against Imran Khan

On Nov 27, 2017, Pakistan Rangers Punjab DG Major General Azhar Naveed distributed envelopes with a token Rs. 1000 as bus fare to members of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Ya Rasul Allah (TeL) after the government’s agreement with the protesters.

One of Pakistan’s leading news channels, Samaa TV reported that distribution of cash to TeL protestors was distributed on the instructions of the Prime Minister Imran Khan.  Samaa TV tried to give the impression that the distribution of cash involved government consent but, DG ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor denied the news in one of the channel’s programs. He said that as reported by Samaa TV and some other news channel, no such thing happened there. In fact, it was an on spot decision made by DG Maj-Gen Azhar Naveed himself just to assist people; those who were going home and had no money. There was no such thing as reported by Samaa TV.

Samaa TV often faces backlash for false stories. The TV channel has already been fined by PEMRA for publishing false news like this on 23 May, 2016. It seems like they have no internal control and verification of news has become a huge issue for the media outlet’s digital team.
