The T20 star will be assisted by local player Bhanuka Rajapaksa as the Vice-Captain in the tournament.
The former Pakistani skipper has sidelined Sarfaraz Ahmed. He withdrew from the LPL tournament to fulfill his national duty in series against New Zealand.
Nadeem Omar, Galle Gladiators’ owner, was happy after Afridi”s appointment as the new captain.
“Afridi is a global superstar and a great leader thus he is the perfect choice to lead Galle Gladiators in LPL,” he said.
“I believe Afridi’s experience will be great for all our foreign players and local Sri Lankan guys. I trust that he will be able to help us fight for the title and win it,” Omar added.
The team will play their first match on November 27 against Jaffna Stallions.
On the other hand, Pakistan’s wicket-keeper, Kamran Akmal has withdrawn from the Lanka Premier League (LPL).
According to sources, after examining the MRI reports, doctors advised Kamran Akmal to have three weeks of rest to prevent a “neck spasm” from aggravation.
Akmal was earlier scheduled to leave for Sri Lanka on Friday.
He also missed the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020 eliminator on November 14 in Karachi due to stiffness in his neck.
His side Peshawar Zalmi lost that must-win encounter to Lahore Qalandars by five wickets.
