After Inter Milan won 3-1 at Spezia on Friday, AC Milan will stay atop Serie A this weekend thanks to a 2-0 win over struggling Genoa.

Milan, who are expected to be sold to Bahraini investment firm Investcorp, recaptured first place after being demoted to second place just before kick-off in front of almost 70,000 fans at the San Siro.

However, Leao’s cushioned volley from Pierre Kalulu’s cross in the 11th minute and a Junior Messias strike with three minutes remaining were enough to keep Stefano Pioli’s team two points ahead of Inter.

Third-placed Napoli will play in-form Roma on Monday evening in the hopes of catching Inter on 69 points, while Juventus are nine points behind ahead of their home match against Bologna on Saturday.

The sumptuous finish by Portugal forward Leao was the highlight of an otherwise lacklustre performance that demonstrated why Milan has battled to put away Serie A’s lesser lights since the turn of the year.

The seven-time European winners had few chances on the night, with Olivier Giroud’s misjudged overhead kick in the 57th minute the first truly good chance after Leao’s goal.

After forcing a good save from Salvatore Sirigu, Leao came close to increasing the hosts’ lead, but Messias put the home crowd in a party mood when he slammed in the second after being denied by the Italy international in the Genoa goal.

Inter behind Milan

Simone Inzaghi’s side won for the third time in a row, confirming their comeback after a difficult February and March, and keeping them on Milan’s trail.

“Today it was really important to win. We’re very happy but we need to carry on like this,” Inter midfielder Marcel Brozovic told DAZN.

“We’re a good team, we’ve got six matches to go and we need to win all of them.”

Brozovic scored the first goal for the visitors, his first league goal of the season, and it was a magnificent performance from the player who keeps Inter ticking.

The Croatia midfielder responded to Danilo D’Ambrosio’s knockdown with a stunning left-footed strike that sailed past Ivan Provedel and put Inter on the road to win.

Soon after the break, Martin Erlic flashed a header just wide, but Inter wasted a number of wonderful chances before Martinez increased their lead.

The biggest error occurred in the 49th minute when Ivan Perisic stole the ball from Edin Dzeko’s feet just as the Bosnian was about to score his second goal.

Martinez scored his 15th league goal of the season when he met Perisic’s inswinging cross and clipped home the second.

With two minutes remaining, Giulio Maggiore equalized with a spectacular effort, but Sanchez sealed the victory by rolling home Martinez’s cross in the last seconds, giving Inter a temporary lead in Italy’s four-team title battle.
