Ben Stokes seems to be obvious choice to lead England’s Test team

Former England captains Michael Vaughan and Nasser Hussain believe that star all-rounder Ben Stokes has a “sharp cricket brain” and is the “obvious” option to succeed Joe Root as Test skipper.

Root stepped down as captain on Friday, completing a five-year reign that had been marred by criticism following England’s 0-4 Ashes loss to Australia and 0-1 series loss to West Indies.

Vaughan told an International news channel, “I don’t see anyone else who could take the position and be guaranteed a spot in the side.”

“You definitely have someone with a smart cricket brain in Ben Stokes; he’s going to give it his all, and he’ll command the respect of the players around him.”

Hussain, who captained England from 1999 to 2003, also endorsed Stokes for the Test captaincy.

“Ben Stokes, in my opinion, is the most apparent candidate. As a cricketer,  Stokes has accomplished incredible feats and possesses a sharp cricket mind. He demonstrated that in the World Cup final and at Headingley… He demonstrated this when he took over from Joe Root on occasion “According to a foreign sports website, Hussain said.

“‘Oh, Ben Stokes,’ they say, ‘do you know what happened to Flintoff and Botham?’ Ben Stokes isn’t Flintoff or Botham; don’t evaluate him based on what others have accomplished.”

Last year, Stokes took a vacation from cricket to work on his mental health, and Hussain believes it is critical that he is in good mental shape because captaincy can be frustrating.

“The point I made about the toll it takes on you as a captain is difficult for Stokes. Mentally and physically, you must be in good shape “he stated

Hussain, on the other hand, suggested Stuart Broad as a backup if Stokes is unavailable.

“If Stokes isn’t the right fit, Stuart Broad, in the short term, has a great cricket brain, is a true fighter, a real competitor, and he’s got a point to prove after what’s transpired in the last few months, and we know what Broad is like when he’s got a point to prove.”

“In the medium term, I can see Broad doing something similar to Pat Cummins, who has led Australia wonderfully as a bowler.” Former England captain Michael Atherton, who captained the team from 1993 to 1998, backed Stokes for the post.

“You have to choose someone who is deserving of his spot on the side.”

“Loyalty is Ben Stokes’ distinguishing characteristic, and he is extremely loyal to Joe Root, his number two, and excellent friends with him. If the job comes his way, he’ll be much more comfortable accepting it”, he added.
