Sergio Busquets is the most outstanding opponent Bukayo Saka has faced since breaking through at Arsenal.
The 20-year-old made his senior debut for Arsenal in 2018 and has since played 122 times for the club in all competitions.
Saka has only faced Busquets once in his career, when Arsenal faced Barcelona in a pre-season friendly in August of this year.
Saka confesses he struggled to get close to Busquets, who had eight La Liga crowns and three Champions League wins to his name.
When asked by GQ to choose the opponent who has most impressed him throughout his career, Saka responded, ‘Sergio Busquets.’
‘The way he turned me so gracefully!’ I approached him to press him, feigning this side before moving to the other, and the way he embarrassed me: I was just like, ‘Yeah, this guy is elite.’
‘Respect,’ I replied as he abruptly removed me from the play. [Busquets] is always three steps ahead of the game, and that is what distinguishes you as a top footballer. That’s what I realized on that particular day.’
Saka has been a revelation in the Premier League since breaking into the Arsenal first squad in 2019, establishing as one of England’s most promising young players.
The Hale End academy graduate was awarded Arsenal’s player of the season at the age of 19 after impressing in a variety of positions ranging from left-wing back to central midfield.
Saka, who now plays in the traditional left wing position, grew up idolizing Lionel Messi and believes one of the Argentine’s legendary goals against Athletic Bilbao is one he’d most like to score himself.
Saka explained, ‘Because of the moment.’ ‘I believe it was Leo Messi’s goal against Athletic Club in the Copa Del Rey final.’ He dribbled everyone in that one. Now that I’m playing, I understand how difficult it is to score that goal.’ People try to kick him, bring him down in the process, but he just continues going, and he still manages to score in the end.
‘Wow,’ I exclaimed. You’re not stopping him when he says he’s going by you!’
