Chelsea defeated West Ham 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in a Premier League match.

The Blues have consolidated their third-place finish in the table, with a five-point edge over fourth-placed Arsenal and a seven-point lead over Tottenham Hotspur, who have a game in hand.

After losing their last four games in all competitions on home turf, Thomas Tuchel’s side got back on track in front of their own fans.

In the first half, neither team had a single shot on target, with Chelsea having the most of possession.

Blues were unable to test West Ham’s defense, which was not at full strength due to the absence of Declan Rice, Manuel Lanzini, Aji Alese, and Jarrod Bowen.

After 70 minutes, the game began to take shape, with both teams playing end-to-end football.

Chelsea came close to scoring a couple of times, but their attempts either went over the bar or hit the side of the net.

Timo Werner came close to scoring when the ball landed pleasantly in his path in the box after a Chelsea corner, but he was unable to produce enough force on his effort, which Lukasz Fabianski saved.

Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku was sent off after being hauled back in the box by West Ham defender Craig Dawson, depriving him a goal-scoring opportunity.

Jorginho, who has scored nine penalties this season, missed this one, allowing Fabianski to make a straightforward save.

The Italian also missed a penalty for his country, which was eliminated by North Macedonia in a FIFA World Cup qualifier.

‘Winning at home is a fantastic feeling’

Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic scored in the 90th minute after coming off the bench for Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea earned an important three points thanks to the American’s low shot from a cross by Marcus Alonso, giving them their first home win in five games in all competitions.

Pulisic scored Chelsea’s sixth Premier League goal of the season.

“It feels fantastic to be in the top four again. We needed a win at home, and it feels fantastic to triumph in front of our home crowd. We must conclude the season on a high note”, according to Pulisic.

West Ham overcame Chelsea 3-2 at the London Stadium in the reverse fixture in December, but they haven’t won at Stamford Bridge since November 2019.

In the Premier League, the Hammers have only 16 points from their last 22 road games. At Stamford Bridge, David Moyes has never won a match.

West Ham has only won one of their previous five league games, and has only one point from their last two.

The Hammers are also in the Europa League semi-final, and David Moyes’ side will face Norwich City, Manchester City, and Brighton & Hove Albion in their remaining four Premier League games.

Chelsea will host Manchester United, who are currently in sixth position in the Premier League, on Thursday before travelling to Everton the following day.

Blues will also face Liverpool in the FA Cup final at Wembley later this month.

Even if West Ham do not qualify for the UEFA Champions League this season, they can still qualify by winning the Europa League, since the Hammers will face Eintracht Frankfurt in the semi-final next week.
