Mo Farah, four-time Olympic winner, will compete in the Vitality London 10,000 on Monday for the first time since failing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

Phil Sesemann, the first male British finisher in the 2021 London Marathon, and Chris Thompson, the British Olympic trial winner last year, will be up against the 39-year-old Briton.

A fractured foot impeded Farah’s effort to qualify for Tokyo 2020.

He has stated that he intends to continue racing on both the road and the track.

“I think it will be a marathon, or half marathon, and I’d love one more track event,” Farah said in July when asked what race he thinks will mark the end of his career.

Farah returned to the track in 2020 after focusing on the marathon for three years, but his quest to defend the 10,000m championship he won in Rio five years prior was cut short when the qualifying time proved too difficult for him.

In-form Eilish McColgan may pose a danger to Paula Radcliffe’s 19-year-old British and European 10km record.

In February, the 31-year-old Scot surpassed Radcliffe’s British half-marathon record and improved her own British 5km record in Malaga.

McColgan’s 10k personal best, established last year in Manchester, is 30 minutes 52 seconds, 31 seconds slower than Radcliffe’s.

“I couldn’t have wished for a better way to kick off my 2022 season than by breaking the British 5k record in my first race,” McColgan remarked.

“Now I’m looking forward to returning to the UK and running the Vitality London 10,000 to see how I’m doing over a 10k.”

McColgan will be joined by Steph Twell and Jess Piasecki, although Charlotte Purdue has withdrawn owing to sickness.

David Weir, six-time Paralympic champion, and Shelly Woods, two-time Paralympic silver medalist and one-time Paralympic bronze medalist, will head the wheelchair fields.
