Major League Baseball (MLB) on Friday announced that pitcher Trevor Bauer of the Los Angeles Dodgers would be suspended for two seasons due to sexual assault allegations for which he was never charged criminally.
In a statement, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said Bauer had broken MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy after an “extensive investigation.”
Bauer’s career has been in jeopardy since July 2, when he was placed on leave after a California woman said that two sexual encounters with him in April and May of 2021 turned violent without her consent.
Bauer quickly announced that he would appeal the suspension on Twitter.
“In the strongest possible terms, I deny committing any violation of the league’s domestic violence & sexual assault policy,” Bauer wrote. “I am appealing this action and expect to prevail. As we have throughout this process, my representatives & I respect the confidentiality of the proceedings.”
Bauer was suspended without pay for 324 championship season games, or two full seasons, according to Manfred’s announcement.
“In accordance with the terms of the Policy, the Commissioner’s Office will not issue any further statements at this point in time,” the statement said.
Bauer was placed on paid administrative leave for the first time on July 2, 2021, just days after his accuser in California obtained a temporary restraining order against him.
He allegedly choked her to unconsciousness before punching her in the head, according to her.
Bauer’s lawyers and representatives denied any misconduct, claiming that all of the interactions were completely voluntary.
The temporary restraining order was eventually lifted, and prosecutors in Los Angeles County declined to bring charges against Bauer due to a lack of evidence.
Bauer filed a defamation lawsuit against the lady and two media outlets earlier this month for their coverage of the allegations.
Bauer has also dismissed as “categorically false” another woman’s claim of a similar event in 2017, when he was a member of the Cleveland Browns, as reported by the Washington Post last August.
Bauer inked a three-year, $102 million contract with the Dodgers after leaving the Reds in 2021.
In a statement, the Dodgers said they participated in the investigation and were told of its result.
“Today, we were informed that MLB has concluded its investigation into allegations that have been made against Trevor Bauer and the commissioner has issued his decision regarding discipline,” the team statement said.
“The Dodgers organization takes all allegations of this nature very seriously and does not condone or excuse any acts of domestic violence or sexual assault.
“We’ve cooperated fully with MLB’s investigation since it began and we fully support MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy, and the commissioner’s enforcement of the policy.”
