Sega has officially announced the information behind Sonic Origins, a remastered collection of Sonic The Hedgehog 1, 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD, in the run-up to Sonic’s 31st birthday (feeling old yet?).

However, don’t expect pure porting of these Sega classics. Sonic Origins contains additional achievements, collectibles, animated shorts, and game modes, as well as enhanced visuals updated for today’s systems, giving these ancient favourites a new lease on life.

Players in Sonic Origins will be able to pick between classic and anniversary modes. Players will be able to play the games in their original splendour and aspect ratios in vintage mode.

You won’t have to worry about getting crushed to death in Chemical Plant Zone in Anniversary mode because it features a full-screen experience and endless lives (you know the place.)

Throughout all four games in the Sonic Origins series, you can play as Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, giving you the chance to beat Metal Sonic as Knuckles or fly around Green Hill Zone as Tails.

Sonic CD hasn’t been properly re-released since 2011, despite Sega’s several bundles of the first three Sonic games. There’s no word yet on whether this version of the game will include the US or (much superior) Japanese music. Make your own decision.

You may preorder the game here, but Sega seems to have gone out of their way to make the procedure as difficult as possible.

Sega, we’ve demonstrated that we’ll open our wallets for everything, so don’t make this any more difficult than it needs to be.

While we won’t see gameplay for Sonic Frontiers for a while, Sonic Origins is perfectly suited to keep fans occupied till then.

On June 23rd, Sonic Origins will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
