A significant Grade III hamstring injury has forced Ajinkya Rahane to withdraw from the India tour of England in June and July.

The former India captain and vice-captain have already lost his place in the India Test XI, with Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer usurping Cheteshwar Pujara’s places, but the latest loss could keep him out of the touring group entirely.

The Indian team, which is anticipated to be named in a week, will depart for England on June 16.

On Monday evening, Rahane is expected to leave the Kolkata Knight Riders.

He got injured during KKR’s last game, on May 14, against Sunrisers Hyderabad, and was not seen fielding throughout the game at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

He will report to the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, where he may need more than four weeks of rehabilitation, according to sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Rahane has 133 runs in seven games this IPL, which isn’t exactly what he was hoping for.

For the selectors, Rahane’s absence may not be as much of a burden as putting together a squad, or squads.

With South Africa hosting a five-match Twenty20 series at home following the IPL, the Chetan Sharma-led committee is anticipated to select two teams: one for the England tour and another for the home series against South Africa.

Last summer, India had one team in England and another in Sri Lanka, and the situation will be similar.

According to an international sports website, all of the regular players, including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Pujara (who is in fine form for Sussex in the county circuit), will be selected for the England tour and will be relieved of their T20I duties against South Africa, who play matches in Delhi, Cuttack, Viza, Rajkot and Bengaluru from June 9 to 19.

The roster will be made up of a blend of youth, experience, and IPL standouts.

Tilak Varma, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna, and Avesh Khan, among others, could be chosen with Shikhar Dhawan, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Dhawan might return as captain. Suryakumar Yadav’s fitness will be examined before the selection meeting, which is scheduled to take place in person rather than via a virtual conference call.

The coaching staff will have to distribute responsibilities among themselves, and head coach Rahul Dravid’s approval is expected.

The side that faces South Africa could go to Dublin for a two-match T20I series against Ireland on June 26 and 28, while the seniors could be featured in a tour game in England.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is in talks to organize a warm-up match before the Test, which will take place in Birmingham from July 1 to 5.
