Frank Lampard’s side remains in the bottom three, but with a game in hand, they have closed the gap on Burnley and Leeds to two points.
Richarlison pounced on a Cesar Azpilicueta error one minute into the second half to give the home team and a nervous Goodison Park crowds something to hold on to.
To get over the line, they needed Jordan Pickford to show why he is England’s number one goalkeeper with a sequence of spectacular saves.
Chelsea’s defeat means they still have work to do if they want to finish in the top four and play in the Champions League next season.
If Arsenal avoids loss at West Ham, the Blues’ lead over fifth place may be trimmed to five points by the end of the day.
Everton, on the other hand, had a far greater need for the points.
The Toffees haven’t been out of the Premier League since 1954, and they could go bankrupt if they don’t get out of this mess in the final five games of the season.
Lampard’s side were five points behind after Burnley’s thrilling late win at Watford on Saturday.
Leeds, on the other hand, may be uneasily looking over their shoulders as they prepare to face Arsenal and Chelsea in their final four games.
Richarlison gave Everton hope with a neat finish after Azpilicueta fell on the edge of his own box after a tense first 45 minutes.
The Brazilian then set up Vitaliy Mykolenko for a second, which should have come seconds later.
Instead, the hosts were forced to fend off wave after wave of Chelsea attacks.
Pickford rushed across his line to parry Azpilcueta’s follow-up effort after Mason Mount’s shot bounced off the inside of one post and onto another.
Pickford was brave to block Antonio Rudiger’s thunderous strike with his face from the subsequent corner.
The home support’s nerves were shattered during the seven minutes of added time, when Pickford came to his side’s rescue once more to deny Mateo Kovacic.
Everton, on the other hand, clung to hope in their fight to avoid relegation.
