Paolo Guerrero, who is 38 years old, does not fear the passage of time because he encounters it every day.

In a sense, that is what the veteran attacker is doing in Phoenix, Arizona, where he has been based since 3 May and will work on the final stages of his injury recuperation for the next two weeks. He has left his entourage in Peru in search of a peaceful atmosphere, with nothing to distract him.

As he does strength and flexibility exercises and participates in progressive overload workouts, the difficulty level of his sessions, which can last up to two and a half hours, increases day by day. Lunch is next, followed by some rest. He gets manual treatment and does core training exercises later in the afternoon.

After all of this, he goes for a run on the on-site pitch, accelerating, slowing down, then accelerating again, pushing himself to the limit – sometimes until late at night.

“I have the strength to continue through this process because football is my love,” Guerrero told FIFA in his first interview in months, while taking part in a contrast therapy session in a freezing cold pool. “This is my life.” I don’t feel really alive when I’m not playing football. I don’t feel like myself. I’m not sure how to adequately explain what it implies. It’s my life, and I can’t see giving it up. I’ve had a lot of troubles, largely because of this terrible injury.”
