MS Dhoni made a successful comeback to captaincy as Chennai Super Kings defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 13 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

As CSK posted 202-2, Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed 99 off 57 balls in a season-high 182-run stand with fellow opener Devon Conway (85 not out off 55 balls).

Despite Nicholas Pooran’s magnificent unbroken 64 off just 33 balls, Sunrisers could only manage 189-6 in reply.

On Saturday, Dhoni, 40, reclaimed the CSK captaincy from Ravindra Jadeja.

After only two wins in eight games as captain, India all-rounder Jadeja stepped down, and wicketkeeper Dhoni received a standing ovation at the toss in Pune.

With the win over Sunrisers, former India captain Dhoni now has 122 wins from 205 games as an IPL leader.

Gaikwad was on his way to becoming the third hitter in this season’s IPL to achieve a century, but he was dismissed for backward point by T Natarajan, one run short of his second IPL ton.

Jos Buttler of England has three centuries for Rajasthan Royals this season, leading the standings for the Orange Cap, which is awarded to the competition’s greatest run scorer each year, while KL Rahul of India has two centuries for Lucknow Super Giants.

In a quick start to the chase, Sunrisers captain Kane Williamson struck 47 off 37 balls, but left-arm pace bowler Mukesh Choudhary’s 4-46 slowed their momentum and ensured they fell short.

CSK has already won three of its nine games, but they are still in ninth place in the 10-team table, with Sunrisers in fourth place.
