Arsenal went from having control of their Champions League destiny to requiring a miracle on the final day of the season after a 2-0 defeat at Newcastle that was far more comprehensive than the final score suggests.

Newcastle were on top of Arsenal from the opening minute, helped by their usual vociferous supporters at St. James’ Park, and the Gunners had no reaction.

“That’s what we need to consider,” he responded. “But it’s true that we couldn’t handle the game we had to play here [in Newcastle] tonight.”

“And we tried to adjust some things, but it didn’t help,” he went on. “We had a few instances where we looked a little bit better, and the start of the second half was a little bit better — we knew what we had to do a little bit better — but the execution was so awful.” We handed up a lot of goals that were terrible. They were deserving of the victory.”

With only one match remaining in the 2021-22 Premier League season, Arsenal has fallen two points behind Tottenham Hotspur in the race for fourth place. With Tottenham facing last-placed and already-relegated Norwich City on the road, it appears a foregone conclusion that Spurs will be playing in the Champions’ League group stage next season.

Arsenal had hoped to make a significant stride forward this season under Arteta, who has been in charge for two and a half seasons.

The 40-year-old Spaniard delivered his postgame statement to the team, and it didn’t sound like he was trying to cheer them up.

According to Arteta, he informed his team, “that I’m terribly disappointed, that Newcastle were 10 times better than us and absolutely deserved the match.” “And the level of performance is nowhere near what we need to be if we want to compete in the Champions League.”
