Thomas Tuchel was disappointed as Chelsea fell 1-0 to Everton on Sunday, who are fighting for their Premier League lives as the season draws to a close.
Tuchel wasn’t shy in admitting that the Blues aren’t guaranteed a top-four finish yet, and that they may miss out on an automatic Champions League ticket if they keep putting in inconsistent performances.
Chelsea were defeated by Everton in a match that raised a few eyebrows after forward Richarlison scored a 46th-minute winner.
Chelsea, who are now in third place, have only picked up four points in their past four games as a result of the single goal.
Chelsea appeared to be strong favorites to finish in the top four at one time last month, but things have altered since their defeat to Arsenal.
Chelsea is three points ahead of Arsenal and five points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in the race for top four, with only four games remaining for the Blues.
“I mentioned several weeks ago that I didn’t feel safe, and we’re never safe… whether we’re in a competition for top one, top two, or top four, merely having four points in the last four games will never be enough,” Tuchel said following Chelsea’s defeat at Goodison Park.
“We need to look after ourselves. At the moment, we don’t get the points we deserve when we play well, and we lose when we play average. This is a poor combination.”
Tuchel stated his squad was paying the price for significant blunders in their last few games after Richarlison’s goal came after a mistake by Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta.
Chelsea, on the other hand, were denied an equalizer by Jordan Pickford, who made a spectacular stop that left spectators speechless.
“We knew what was coming, and we fought to keep clean sheets in the last few games,” Tuchel remarked.
“We only had one win in the past four, against West Ham United, and I’m really dissatisfied.”
“What can I do?” says Tuchel.
“The ball is yours; throw it away for a goal; it’s the worst that can happen… It occurs far too frequently. We are unable to play without making major errors, which is why we are unable to produce results.”
Chelsea will face Wolverhampton Wanderers in a Premier League match on Saturday.
