Carlos Brathwaite was accused of “reckless” behavior during his team’s seven-wicket loss to Derbyshire in the Vitality Blast on Sunday. Since being slapped with five penalty runs for throwing the ball towards the opposing Wayne Madsen.

The event happened in the 13th over of Derbyshire’s chase at Edgbaston. When Madsen attempted to take a run but was promptly turned back as Brathwaite picked up the ball in his follow-through. The Bears’ captain instantly hurled the ball to shatter the stumps.

Brathwaite immediately raised his hand to apologize to Madsen. Indicating that it was not intended. His opponent, gesticulating directly towards the square-leg umpire. Ben Debenham, before being called through for the run. Meanwhile, Brathwaite was spotted claiming to the standing umpire, Steve O’Shaughnessy.  His shy was a response to Madsen first moving out of his crease, but he was overruled following a meeting between the two umpires.

Brathwaite was later penalized for a Level 2 infraction under the MCC Laws dealing to ‘Unfair Play,’ and Derbyshire were allowed five more runs in a 160-run chase that they finally completed with 11 balls to spare.

“The umpires deemed Carlos Brathwaite’s throw reckless and that is what it was,” Madsen told

Brathwaite agreed to retire after the teams’ first encounter earlier this month in a rain-shortened match.
