Undefeated American Devin Haney defeated Australian George Kambosos on points to become the first undisputed lightweight world champion in contemporary boxing history.

Haney, the clear favorite and highly regarded WBC champion, successfully defended his belt for the fifth time and in the process stripped Kambosos of his WBA, IBF, and WBO titles with a unanimous decision.

He became the first undisputed lightweight champion since Pernell Whitaker in 1992, and the first in the era of four belts, which began in 2004.

Kambosos was defeated by Haney’s extraordinary speed, instinct, and relentless left jab, which frustrated the Australian boxer, who struggled to deliver sufficient powerful blows.

It was a defensive masterpiece by the American, whose slick abilities and clever tactical acumen prevailed in front of a 41,000-strong pro-Kambosos crowd at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium.

All three judges awarded Haney the victory with scores of 116-112, 116-112, and 118-110.

“This is a dream come true,” said Haney, who got a big boost on the eve of the fight when his father and lead trainer Bill was granted an 11th-hour visa after initially being denied entry to Australia over a three-decades-old drugs conviction.

“I was comfortable,” said Haney. “I was just sticking to the game-plan … I handicapped him of his best things. He wanted to land the overhand right and the left hook.”

In the 135-pound limit match, the 23-year-old improved his record to 28-0 with 15 knockouts, while the 28-year-old Kambosos suffered his first professional loss in 21 bouts since making his debut in 2013.

The victory propels Haney into an exclusive group of boxers.

He is only the seventh boxer to simultaneously hold titles from the four major sanctioning organizations — WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO.

Other contenders include Bernard Hopkins (middleweight), Jermain Taylor (middleweight), Terence Crawford (super lightweight), Oleksandr Usyk (cruiserweight), Josh Taylor (super lightweight), Saul Alvarez (super middleweight), and Jermell Charlo (super middleweight) (super welterweight).
