MS Dhoni’s first of 538 matches for India was when Dwaine Pretorius was 15 years old. Dhoni made his IPL debut four years later, and has since appeared in 234 games.

Pretorius has appeared in six of the latter.

What was the most important takeaway for the fast bowling all-rounder from the experience?

“Anything is always possible,” Pretorius said during a press conference in Delhi on Monday (June 6), ahead of the start of a five-match T20I series in the Indian capital on Thursday.

Pretorius had never played in the IPL before this year, when he was a member of the Chennai Super Kings.

“And I got a firsthand experience with MS’s magic.” Pretorius remarked, “I truly enjoyed playing under Dhoni and batting with him.”

“Seeing how great he is and what he’s done for the sport in this country shows you how enormous he is.”

Pretorius and the Indian icon had four collaborations. Three of the balls didn’t last more than five.

However, in a crucial seventh-wicket stand against Mumbai Indians at the DY Patil Stadium on April 21, the pair put on 33 off 21 balls.

“The most important thing I learned from him is how calm he is at the crease and how much he tries to take the pressure off himself and put it on the bowler,” Pretorius said of his close encounter with Dhoni.

“He taught me that the hitter isn’t under any more strain at the end of the game. The bowler is the one who is under the most strain. If you have to defend 18 off the last three balls, you can still lose the game, but as a batter, you can actually win it.”

“It was a new perspective. He isn’t overly enthusiastic. He doesn’t have a lot of self-doubt. Anything can happen at any time. He’s a big believer in the future.”

“He believes he is capable of accomplishing anything. I’m going to try to incorporate that tranquilly, as well as the notion that any game can be won from any position.”

This was not a common occurrence for CSK this year. They won only four of their 14 games and were ousted from the play-offs for the second time, after Mumbai.

Given that Chennai had reached nine finals and won four titles – second only to Mumbai’s five – as well as being the defending champions, their performance this year must have shocked and horrified the team.

Pretorius replied, “Not really.”

“The CSK crew and franchise setup have a lot of experience, which is great. We all know that cricket isn’t always on your side. It’s critical to take the positives from a difficult season and use them to construct a better future; to ensure that a bad season isn’t a total loss.”

What does Pretorius hope the IPL teaches the international game?

“The strategic timeout is one of my favorite parts of the game.”

“It makes the game a little longer, but it divides it into three sections. It allows each side to evaluate their approach and determine the best course of action.”

“You also get the coaches’ outside perspective, or objective judgment, on certain scenarios.”

“It adds fluidity to the game while also breaking momentum. So, even if you’re out for the first few overs, you can re-enter the game after the strategic timeout.”

In T20Is, Pretorius has 23 wickets at an average of 19.47 and a strike rate of 15.00, with an economy rate of 7.76.

He has a strike rate of 161.50 and has scored 170 runs at a rate of 24.28.
