UEFA Nations League season began in June 2022, with a champion to be crowned in 2023 and 10 promotion and ten relegation spots to be determined. France will look to defend their title, while other European powers will vie for a chance to dethrone Les Bleus, who are also the defending FIFA World Cup champions.

The UEFA Nations League was established in 2018 to replace the numerous friendlies that filled the gaps between more prestigious international competitions. National teams now have meaningful competition to fill the gaps, and each Nations League cycle will last two years.

The 55 member nations of UEFA’s European governing body are divided into four “leagues” or tiers. Each league was founded on the FIFA World Rankings, and since then, teams have won promotion to higher-ranked leagues while others have been relegated to lower tiers based on their performance.

Leagues A, B, and C are divided into four groups of four teams each. League D includes the remaining seven countries, which are divided into two groups of four teams each.

How the UEFA Nations League operates

The four group winners in League A advance to compete for the Nations League title in June 2023, while the group winners in Leagues B, C, and D are promoted to the next highest league ahead of the next edition.

The bottom teams in Leagues A and B are automatically relegated, while the bottom teams in League C compete in a relegation playoff, with two of the four nations dropping down to the lowest league (League D).

The majority of the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League group stage will be completed in the summer and fall of 2022, with only a few decisions to be handed down in 2023 and early 2024.
