Tamim Iqbal, the opener for Bangladesh, announced his retirement from Twenty20 Internationals on Facebook.

After Bangladesh swept West Indies 3-0 in the ODI series, the top hitter declared his retirement from the shorter version of the game.

Tamim commented on Facebook after The Tigers beat West Indies away: “Today is my last T20 international. Thanks.”

Tamim made his T20I debut in 2007 and departs with 1701 runs in 74 appearances at 24.65 and 117.47. Bangladesh’s lone T20I century came in 2016 against Oman.

Tamim was the ODI Player of the Series after scoring 117 runs in three matches, including a 50* in the second ODI.

Southpaw’s T20I retirement is expected. In January, Tamim declared a six-month hiatus from T20I cricket. Before that, he had retired from last year’s T20 World Cup in Oman and UAE to let the new generation take over.

The 33-year-old has guided the Tigers as ODI skipper to five straight triumphs, including two away victories in West Indies and South Africa. Tamim was the top run-getter in both series.

Bangladesh is on course for straight qualifying for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.

Tamim has expressed a desire to concentrate on longer forms, and his departure from T20I cricket will enable him to do so.
