Canada and Costa Rica qualified for the Women’s World Cup in 2023 by winning their group stage matches in the CONCACAF W tournament on Friday.
Canada, the defending Olympic champion, defeated Panama 1-0 with to Julia Grosso’s goal in the 64th minute, while Cristin Granados scored twice in the first half of Costa Rica’s 4-0 triumph over Trinidad and Tobago.
Costa Rica and Canada both moved to 2-0 in their respective groups to win spots in Thursday’s semi-finals of the eight-team North American regional tournament and flights to Australia and New Zealand for next year’s global women’s football competition.
By reaching the CONCACAF semifinals, the two-time defending Women’s World Cup champion United States has already ensured a chance to win a third consecutive trophy.
Depending on the outcome of their Monday group-stage encounter, either Haiti or Jamaica will earn the final remaining Women’s World Cup spot.
Each group’s third-place team advances to next February’s international playoff for three Women’s World Cup berths.
The CONCACAF competition also serves as a regional qualification for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The CONCACAF champions will qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Next year, the second-and third-place teams will compete in a playoff to earn the final slot in the tournament.
Granados scored in the 18th and 45th minutes for Costa Rica, while Lauryn Hutchinson scored an own goal for Trinidad and Tobago in the 33rd and Katherine Alvarado scored the decisive goal for Las Ticas in the 48th.
