Nakashima turned into the seventh player from the United States to book a spot in the third round of the grasscourt Grand Slam this year.

Highest level American Taylor Fritz, John Isner, Jenson Brooksby, Tommy Paul, Steve Johnson and Frances Tiafoe are the others to have arrived at that stage – – the most at a Grand Slam since the 1996 U.S. Open and the most at Wimbledon in 27 years.

The 20-year-old Nakashima, positioned 56th on the planet, hit 22 champs while restricting his natural mistakes to 14 to overcome Canadian left-hander Shapovalov.

“It felt astonishing out there. To play against such an undeniable level player on perhaps of the greatest stage, you can’t ever beat that,” Nakashima said after his success. “With each match I think my game is advancing in the correct heading.

“I’m gaining some significant experience from these matches, win or misfortune. I think getting to the third round in Paris was enormous for my certainty.

“Simply realizing that I could contend with these top folks at the Grand Slams. Making the third round here is one more positive development.”

Shapovalov concurred, anticipating a “splendid future” for his rival.

“He remained very strong. It was undeniably challenging to track down shortcomings,” said the Canadian, who has now lost seven of his last eight matches.

“He didn’t give me much by any stretch of the imagination to look for. He was simply playing an extraordinary match, serving great, bringing well back.

Played all around well from the back. No doubt, I mean, it was extreme for me to sort of track down a great deal of arrangements.”
